The Melinda Villegas Endowment Fund
What price tag would you put on having the opportunity to change the life of not just one person, but many? There are willing students in our community that possess the desire to become teachers, but need financial support. Here’s your chance to help change lives.
Melinda Villegas passed away unexpectedly on October 10th, 2011. At 23 she was wise beyond her years and a gifted teacher. She touched many young lives in a short period of time. Melinda believed that an education could never be taken away. She tried to instill this belief in her students.
There is a huge deficit in two areas of education in the United States – math and science. In a 2009 study, it was found that the U.S. ranks 21st in Science and 25th in Math compared to other students around the world. Melinda participated in the GE²MS program (Generating Educational Excellence in Mathematics and Science) under the direction of Dr. Joe Lazor at UTSA. This program was created specifically to help recruit and prepare UTSA math and science education majors to become effective high school teachers. For more on GE²MS please visit http://utsa.edu/gems
To carry on Melinda’s legacy, The Melinda Jayne Villegas Endowment Fund was created to provide financial aid to UTSA students enrolled in the GE²MS program that want to become math or science teachers, but lack the financial means to do so.
The Melinda Villegas Endowment Fund will continue to grow through donations and funding like yours. Scholarships will be available for students year after year. Here is a way for YOU to make a difference that will continue to give long after we are gone.
Please consider contributing to The Melinda Villegas Endowment Fund. By donating, you will be investing in our future teachers and children.

How Birdies for Charity Works…
Birdies for Charity® is like a walk-a-thon, but instead of donating per mile, participants make a pledge for every birdie made at the Valero Texas Open. You can make a minimum pledge of one penny or more per birdie. The value of your pledge is based on the number of birdies made during the Valero Texas Open. You can also make a flat contribution: with $20 being the requested minimum. Your company can also contribute using the same method. Any individual or corporation that pledges $1 or more per birdie becomes a member of a special Birdies Club.
How the Melinda Villegas Endowment Fund will benefit…
We will receive 100% of every penny we raise through Birdies for Charity. Golf San Antonio, which manages the Valero Texas Open and Birdies for Charity, pays all costs to run the program. The money raised on behalf of The Melinda Villegas Endowment Fund will be contributed to the scholarship program for qualifying GE²MS students striving to become math and science teachers. Depending on how we do, we can even earn “Bonus Money” provided by Golf San Antonio.
Please Support The Melinda Villegas Endowment Fund and Birdies for Charity by making an online pledge on the link below and designating your donation to the Melinda Villegas Endowment Fund. After the tournament, Golf San Antonio will bill you for the amount of your commitment.

“Guess the Birdies” and a new Ford could be yours…
To add sizzle to the program, you can guess how many birdies will be made during the Valero Texas Open. If your guess is correct, you could win a brand-new vehicle. In the event of a tie, a tie-breaking event will determine the winner. And if no one guesses correctly, the computer will randomly select a winner… and it may just pick your name!
Thank you in advance for your support!
"Miner consistently demonstrates a "can do" attitude that is always followed with solid performance."
